Return of the King

Preparing For Combat - Simon Atack

K-King of 158 Squadron returns in the evening light of 6th November 1944. She has been to Gelsenkirken to attack synthetic oil plants north of the Ruhr in Germany.

K-King had suffered heavy flak damage and it seemed that she would have to be ditched. Flown by Flt. Lt W. N. "Bill" Sharp DFC he ordered the crew to carry out their ditching Rear Gunner Geoff Towersduties. Remarkably, with skilful flying she held together for Bill Sharp to divert the aircraft and perform an emergency landing at Woodbridge in Suffolk.

Based on a first-hand account from her rear gunner Flt. Sgt. Geoff Towers BEM (pictured here with Simon), Simon's striking portrayal magnificently captures this epic struggle. The painting shows the strength and durability of the Halifax, which is still flying despite the extensive damage, making land against all the odds. It shows a human triumph.

It took 2 days for repairs to be completed at Woodbridge. Taking off the starboard outer engine blew up but she successfully completed the trip to her home base at Lisset in Yorkshire.
